What are the big six publishers and what are the requirements for getting a job there?

1. Hachette Book Company:

  • Owned by Hachette Livre, which is the second largest publisher in the world
  • Has 107 books on the New York Times Bestsellers List with 35 of those ranked #1

2.  HarperCollins:

  • Combination of J and J Harper and William Collins & Sons
  • (Harper) Mark Twain, the Brontë sisters, Thackeray, Dickens, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr.
  • (Collins) H. G. Wells, Agatha Christie, J. R. R. Tolkien, and C. S. Lewis
  • The first publishing company to make all of its content digital

3. Macmillan:

  • Mainly focuses on education-driven publications for universities, including magazines and journals

4. Penguin Group (USA):

  • The US branch of the larger merged company
  • Part of one of the largest English trade publishing companies in the world

5.      Random House:

  • USA branch of the larger company: the largest trade-book publisher in the world
  • Owned by Bertelsmann AG: one of the world’s largest media companies
  • Largest publisher of children’s books

6.     Simon & Schuster:

  • Published the very first crossword puzzle book in 1924
  • One of the world’s leading publishers in the general interest field: diverse titles over diverse genres
  • Has over 1,800 titles published annually
  • 54 Pulitzer Prize winners

How do you get a job there?

For Entry Level jobs, most of the Big Six are looking for:

  • College graduates who love books but with specific interest in editing and publishing
  • Be able to work in team and also know how and when to step up as a leader
  • Communication ability is key: both oral and written
  • Internships or work experiences in the field
  • Quality academics as well as extracurricular activities
